Jamshedpur: In a historic step toward bringing specialized healthcare to the heart of rural Jharkhand, a state-of-the-art Mobile Cancer Screening Van was officially dedicated to the community today. This life-saving initiative—a collaborative powerhouse involving RSB Foundation, Rotary Club, Tata Steel Foundation (TSF), and Meherbai Tata Memorial Hospital (MTMH)—was flagged off from RSB Unit-1 in Gamharia.
“Reach the Last Mile”: The Vision of Mr. S. K. Behera
Leading the ceremony, Mr. S. K. Behera, Vice Chairman of RSB Group and a well-known social worker, expressed his deep satisfaction with the project’s realization. He placed a strong emphasis on the practical impact this will have on the most vulnerable sections of society.
> “The most effective weapon against a dreaded disease like cancer is timely diagnosis,” Mr. Behera stated. “I am delighted to see this vision turn into reality after a year of hard work. However, the launch is just the beginning. Our primary goal now is to ensure the maximum utilization of this van. It must reach the rural clusters and the last person in our community who otherwise has no access to such advanced medical technology.”

A Survivor’s Mission for the Grassroots
The launch was also deeply personal for Ms. Priyanka Behera, Director and CSR Head of RSB Group. As a cancer survivor, she understands that for a villager, a diagnosis often comes too late.
“For our rural sisters and brothers, traveling to a city for a check-up is often a luxury they cannot afford,” Ms. Behera remarked. “As a survivor, my mission is to ensure that the geography of one’s birth doesn’t determine their chance of surviving cancer. This van is our commitment to taking world-class screening to the doorstep of every rural household.”
Bridging the Diagnostic Divide
Dr. Sujata Mitra, Vice Chairperson of the Jamshedpur Cancer Society, highlighted the van’s technical prowess. Designed specifically to navigate the challenges of rural terrain while housing sensitive medical equipment, the van offers:
* Digital Mammography: Crucial for detecting breast cancer among rural women.
* Pap Smear Kits: For cervical cancer screening, a major health concern in village communities.
* Advanced Oral Scanning: To combat the high incidence of oral cancer in the region.
“Early detection is a miracle for those with limited resources,” Dr. Mitra noted. “By catching the disease early in the village itself, we can save thousands of families from the emotional and financial trauma of late-stage treatment.”
The Power of Partnership
The ceremony was attended by a host of dignitaries, including Mr. Amitabh Chatterjee (Administrative Head, MTMH), Mr. Ashok Jha (President, Rotary Club), Mr. Abhijit Mitra, Mr. Kamal Agarwal, Ms. Jaya Singh, and Mr. Sachikant Tripathi.
This initiative stands as a testament to what can be achieved when corporate leaders and medical experts join forces for a common cause. For the rural population of Jharkhand, this van is not just a vehicle; it is a mobile shield against a deadly disease, ensuring that “Early Detection” is no longer a privilege of the few, but a right for all.
